11:33 pm - For Numb3rs fans....
I have a question, relating to a fic I'm working on.

Okay. What does Charlie call Alan? "Dad"? That's my best guess, even if my inner ear keeps giving me that word in *Don's* voice.

Specifically, this fic is limited 3rd-person, Charlie's POV, and is basically a conversation between Alan and Charlie. So I'm confused as to how to refer to Alan in the story...since I doubt that Charlie thinks of his father by his first name.

Thoughts? Canon reference? Anything?

Current Mood: blahblah

Yeah, I'm fairly certain it's Dad. I've heard one of them--Don, I think--call him Alan, but it's not something either of them does regularly.

Now I'm second-guessing myself and wondering if it's Pop. I have some episodes on tape; I'll check tonight if I can find the time and energy.

Oh, you don't have to do that!

BTW, if Charlie calls Alan "Pop," I'm thinking it's when he's being funny, because otherwise it doesn't really sound like our Charlie.

'Sokay, I did it while I ate dinner. I skimmed six eps--just the scenes where Alan was onscreen, or it seemed they might be talking about him, and I got nineteen Dads and nothing else. The interesting thing to note is that Don seems to use it about twice as much as Charlie--twelve instances to seven.

Thank you! I guess for a fan, there's really nothing stressful about skimming eps, is there? ;-)

Huh. That must be why I was having trouble remembering if Charlie said "Dad" very often, and kept hearing it in Don's voice instead.

Say...do you ever do betas for people? Cause I'm starting to think if I'm going to keep writing Numb3rs I may need another beta (V. could do it, but I already make her beta all my Sentinel and CSI stuff, and two betas are better anyway).

Especially if you make stops for Larry scenes. :)

I used to do quite a lot of beta and editing in Buffy fandom, though I've been 'on hiatus' for a while because of my health. But one of my goals for 2006 is to ease back into it, because I like for that to be part of my contribution to fandom. I'm more detail-oriented than big picture, not super-fast, but fairly thorough. If you want me to do a Numb3rs beta for you so that you can see if you find it useful, that'd be cool.

Indeed. :-) {{{Larry}}}

Oh yay! Considering your excellent comments on my first attempt at Numb3rs fic, I would probably find your beta quite useful. :-) Um...anything you *don't* like to beta, subject/genre-wise? (aside from my own obvious squicks like slash, explicit sex and so forth.) Mostly I'm asking because my current Numb3rs fic (well, 2 of them) is post-"In Plain Sight," so it's going to be referencing that case (possibly pretty strongly).

No, I think your squicks will screen out all of mine, which are largely limited to explicit sex, gratuitous violence, or a blasphemous worldview.

Cool! :-) I actually think the new fic will be ready for beta sometime this weekend (ready to send out to someone, anyway). It's short--basically an epilogue. If you want to email me at livefortheone at hotmail com, so I'll know where/when/whether (and what format) I can send it to you, that would be fantastic.

I think you're right, I recall hearing Don call him Alan at least once. But not Charlie.

I would agree. I'm fairly certain the only one who calls "dad" Alan with any regularity is Larry.

Okay, first: you're into Numb3rs? :-) That makes sense.

And I do think you're right about Larry being the only main character to really use Alan's first name (Amita calls him Mr. Eppes, iirc).

And finally: ICON LUV. *drools over pretty Mal*

I'm pretty sure it's "Dad," though there might be an occasional "Pop" thrown in, depending on the mood.

I did see someone use "Pop" in a fic (yes, humorous mood), and couldn't recall if that was actually canon, though it does sound like Charlie.

"Dad" it shall remain, unless new evidence comes to light.
