Okay, really, I'm very amused at the convergence between the latest episode of Numb3rs and my current reading in Brian Greene's The Elegant Universe.

"Physicists are more like avant-garde composers, willling to bend traditional rules and brush the edge of acceptability in the search for solutions. Mathematicians are more like classical composers, typically working within a much tighter framework, reluctant to go to the next step until all previous ones have been established with due rigor."

Can't imagine a more perfect description of the differing thought processes we saw in the latest episode--and really, that we see all the time between Larry and Charlie.

And engineers, I guess, are like pop songwriters, who stick to a genre and get famous and make the big bucks, but are still mostly a dime a dozen. :)

Haha! That in conjunction with the original quote are totally awesome. I'll be sharing that with my math-buddies ;)
