The moral consciousness of people? I may be a little out of my league here, but wouldn't the purpose of art be to raise the consciousness, period, of people, and all that accompanies it? (Perception, cognition, imagination, subjectivity, behavior) Much art doesn't even seem to conform to an ethical or moral standard.

Quite possibly.

Much art doesn't even seem to conform to an ethical or moral standard.

Yesss, but only if said art is truly amoral (and very little art really is, imo) does it fail to raise a certain amount of moral consciousness.

Okay, I won't be a big tree stump and continue the argument, but I'm glad you believe as you do.

I myself like: "[The object of art is] to make eternal the desperately fleeting moment." -- Tennessee Williams. :-)

(scratches head) Sounds good, but I'm not so sure I agree. That might be one of its purposes, but I don't think it's the only one. And certainly, a heck of a lot of art doesn't do that.

I think the key phrase in the quote might be "final purpose." Certainly, not all art does; and of the art which manages to, very little of it does so directly.

But a good deal of great art does, it seems, intensify moral consciousness...hence my liking of this quote.
