Ask me one question - any one - about my writing, then post this in your LJ so I can satisfy my curiosity about yours...

Would you consider pursuing professional fanfic writing, ala Max Allan Collins on CSI, or another original novel in your chosen fandom?

You mean tie-in novels? Oh, heck yeah. If I could get paid to write novels about my favorite characters and fandoms, I would do it in a heartbeat. I mean, the whole reason I work on the Invisible Man Virtual Season is because it was the first TV show I really craved to work on. This is a way of pretending that I can.

btw, what made you choose CSI for an example of this? I haven't read any of their tie-ins yet. [Trek was what first came to mind. And then, one of my LJ friends did some professional fic for Quantum Leap...I am so jealous.]

coincidence....

I was in Chapters, and I noticed a CSI tie-in on the shelf. A new one must have just come out.

That reminded me of what you do, and what you said about your attempts at original characters.

I'd be tempted to think you had enough of a portfolio to choose from. If you wanted to write tie-ins, I think you might have a shot, if you started sending stuff around.

Can't hurt, anyways.

I am now tempted to go buy CSI tie-in novels. Because I just can't get enough of Grissom. *facepalm*

I don't know how people work that sort of thing. Many tie-in authors have had original works published (*points to EVERYONE who has written for Star Wars*), and the two online fic authors I know were both approached by the publisher, who had somehow discovered their online fic (or so I believe...one Quantum Leap, one Wiseguys).

Maybe I'll finish my original novels and get published...and then eventually wind up writing in other universes as well. Hey, I can dream.

What I mean to say is: You write a story outline, and a sample chapter. And then you send them WITH an SASE, and the worst thing you can get is a rejection letter. Next to that, they could tell you they're not accepting unsolicited manuscripts, but thank you for your efforts. After that, I suppose being ignored sucks.

The best thing you can get is acceptance. The next best thing is interest.
