Quotes for the Day (and a mini-update)

Art is not a pleasure, a solace, or an amusement; art is a great matter. Art is an organ of human life, transmitting man’s reasonable perception into feeling. --Leo Tolstoy

The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance. --Aristotle

An intellectual is a man who says a simple thing in a difficult way; an artist is a man who says a difficult thing in a simple way. --Charles Bukowski

I don’t fully agree with Tolstoy here (I think art is both a great matter and a playful thing), but these three quotes almost entirely sum up my understanding of the power of storytelling and art. They also underline a dichotomy I see in our world, between reasoned discussion and artistic expression, a dichotomy I don’t believe needs to exist.

Due to Harry Potter and some other RL things, I've been considering this topic a lot over lately. I’m going to make a longer post about it later this week: watch this space. :-) (If I forget, someone please nudge me; I really want to write this up while it’s still running around creating sparks in my brain.)

I’m also going to make a ComiCon post, eventually. Right now, being at work is inhibiting my ability to write up a long LJ post (huh, I keep typing “poser” instead of “post.” WTF?) Suffice it to say, for now, that I had a blast, despite blisters, long lines, full panels, and interpersonal drama between some of my hotel-mates. (I’m not going to elaborate on that last; it didn’t hurt my enjoyment of the weekend at all, anyway.)

A weekend which includes running around with geeky friends, listening to Neil Gaiman and Eric Kripke talk (Jensen Ackles was there too, and even hotter in person than he is on the show), and meeting Teryl Rothery can’t be anything but awesome.
