lost in thought

A necessarily paradoxical thought

Idealism is great...as long as you realize that we have to live in the world as it is, and work with that, rather than demanding a non-existent utopia.

Sometimes idealism and national myths need deconstructing...but if we ever lose track of the stories that teach us to be better than we are, we will be utterly lost.

Glad the election is over

I see everyone is making their "obligatory" after-election post.

I hereby decline to join in: not because I'm disappointed (I'll wait until I see the results of the California state propositions before that even becomes an issue) but just because I have no desire to hear people either rave about how great Obama is (though I'm thrilled as the next person about this historic moment in our politics!) or lament how sad they are that McCain lost.

I'll pray for our new President, instead. What a crazy time to be elected! He's going to need it.

ETA: I shall be offline for the remainder of the night. Please to be CIVIL in the comments; I would hate to have to defriend anyone tomorrow for misbehavior.
