|07:42 pm - Anyone with Hotmail receive a similar email?|
I just got an email purporting to be from Windows Hotmail Live (the newer version of Hotmail):
Dear Account User
This Email is from Hotmail Customer Care and we are sending it to every Hotmail Email User Accounts Owner for safety. we are having congestions due to the anonymous registration of Hotmail accounts so we are shutting down some Hotmail accounts and your account was among those to be deleted. We are sending this email to you so that you can verify and let us know if you still want to use this account. If you are still interested please confirm your account by filling the space below.Your User name, password, date of birth and your country information would be needed to verify your account.
Due to the congestion in all Hotmail users and removal of all unused Hotmail Accounts, Hotmail would be shutting down all unused Accounts, You will have to confirm your E-mail by filling out your Login Information below after clicking the reply button, or your account will be suspended within 24 hours for security reasons.
* Username: ..............................
* Password: ................................
* Date of Birth: ............................
* Country Or Territory: ................
After following the instructions in the sheet, your account will not be interrupted and will continue as normal. Thanks for your attention to this request. We apologize for any inconveniences.
Warning!!! Account owner that refuses to update his/her account after two weeks of receiving this warning will lose his or her account permanently.
The Windows Live Hotmail Team
I hesitate to release my username/password to anyone, and this set off my warning bells. But if it's true and I lose my oldest account, my fandom email.... :(
Thoughts? I can't figure out a way to contact Hotmail and verify.
ETA: this appears to be a scam, as I thought. Thank you guys for your help! All other Hotmail users, take notice.
That definitely looks like opportunistic phishing to me. The grammar is iffy, they give two different reasons for account shutdowns, and if they were shutting down "unused accounts" it would be far more practical to ask you to log in (and possibly update your profile) than to send them a raft of text emails to hassle with.
I agree. This REEKS of scam. My first flag is that they don't address you by name (user or other).
They want your pass word? Another flag.
Country or Territory?
Um . . . no.
I'll third the advice . . . Don't do it.
You should check your hotmail account every so often (less than 90 days gap) or you'll lose it. Make it a once a month thing.
When they switched over to "live" they lost all my old mail and my contacts because I'd been too sick to remember to do that. Which is why I use gmail...

I check both of my hotmail accounts multiple times daily; they are my only email accounts. :-)
