09:54 am - Question about icons in LJ
Okay. I have never deleted any of the icons I've uploaded, and I'm now at my limit of 117. The reason I've never deleted them is that when I go back and look at old entries it's weird to me if the icons aren't the same--it always throws me when that happens in a friend's entries, etc. It's like changing the past.

Anyway, my question is this: if one deletes an icon and then uploads a new one, does that new icon fill the spaces the other one occupied, in all old entries and comments? That's what happens to an icon designated as the default icon, I can confirm that; but is it true across the board?

I wondered about that very thing earlier this year when I hit my max, and experimented with it a bit. The answer is: yes and no.

Yes-- if you name the icon the exact same thing as a previous icon. For example, I used to have a Julian Bashir icon designated "made of awesome"; I have temporarily swapped it out for a Captain Kirk one named the exact same thing (see attached), and it applied on all my old entries, too.

A new icon with a unique name would not apply to any old entries, however.

When you delete an icon, whatever past entries you had using that icon changes to whatever you have designated as your default icon. I didn't know that for the longest time! Makes me nuts.

Not sure how it works if you don't have a default icon, though. I wonder if that makes a difference!

My solution, of course, is to have 1,000,000 icon spaces allotted. Of course, after a while, even that would not be enough...

Heh, okay; the default thing is noted. :)

If you use the exact same keywords, it will be replaced.

I believe, unless LJ has changed their parameters, that when you delete an icon it magically turns into your default one on those posts.

LOL, yes, this seems to be the consensus. I'll be careful with deleting.

I have had to rotate out icons a couple of times, and I have learned a couple of things:

1) If you delete an icon, your default icon will automatically fill that space.

2) If you want your new icon to replace the old icon, you have to give it exactly the same keyword(s) that your old icon had. Otherwise, the computer won't be reading the same coding as the old icon.

For this reason, I've started giving my icons very generic keyword designations. If I suspect that I might want to change out an icon later (I often find multiple icons that I would use for the same purpose), I try to give it a keyword that will work for both icons, or one that indicates what I want to use it for.

In the meantime, I've started snagging icons that I like and holding them in reserve in case I ever do get more icon space. I can't imagine having 117 options.

Awesome. I'll have to watch it with the keywords, then. Hmmm. *ponders this*

I have I think 127. And I still have problems not having enough spaces. I have literally a few thousand icons saved on my computer. It drives me crazy that I will never be able to use them all.

It's a sickness.

I think I have 110 spaces available. And probably...500 or 600 icons on my hard drive?

Eek.

For this reason, I've started giving my icons very generic keyword designations. {grin} Mine not only have generic names, they incresingly have multiple generic ones...

I tend to go for one generic name and one specific name per icon. That way, if I want to add a new icon which takes the generic space, I can still use the specific keyword for the original icon.

For example, I have three Brennan icons (Brennan-intelligence, Brennan-dunno and Brennan-note). I also have a generic "Brennan" keyword, plus I have a generic "Bones" keyword.

Of course, that means I have to decide which keyword to use for an icon, so it's probably pointless anyway. Oh well.
