Half-Blood Prince is still eating my brain. [okay, now that's an unpleasant image. *snerk*]

--Can I assume that everyone noticed that Lupin and Snape were filling quite similar roles for the Order this year? Snape was undercover (double agent, no matter whose side you think he's actually on) with the Death Eaters, pretending to be what he used to be. Lupin was undercover with the werewolves, who are mostly sympathetic to Voldemort, and in particular he was with Fenrir Greyback, the creepy bloodlusting pedophile who bit Lupin when he was a kid. My friend Amanda thinks that Lupin may be in the best position to realize that Snape killed Dumbledore on Dumbledore's own orders. I'm not sure I agree, as Dumbledore is one of the few people who believed in Lupin, and Lupin's loss is greater than most of the Order's, right now. But we shall see.

--Speaking of Lupin's undercover work: We know that Lupin was working around/with Greyback. Yet during the battle at Hogwarts, Lupin fought openly on the Order's side, versus a group of Death Eaters that included Greyback. Did Greyback see Lupin there? If he did, isn't Lupin's cover completely blown? (not that I think he'd care--it was really getting to him.)

That's it for now, though I expect to have more to post soon. The speculation never ends....

How much more do they need to spy? I think by the time they get to the big battle, they know what they need to know.

That's a good point. I really wish we knew more about what had been going on outside Hogwarts during this whole year....

Of course, if Remus doesn't need to continue being a spy, that would conceivably free him up to go with Harry, Ron and Hermione on the quest for Horcruxes.... I know, it isn't likely, but hey, a girl can dream. :-) We did get R/T in this book, after all.

I think your friend Amanda has a good idea, for several reasons. One is that Lupin has always seemed to have a more balanced view of Snape than, say Sirius did. Another is that since Dumbledore trusted both him and Snape, and since Snape helped him by brewing the wolfsbane potion, he may identify with Snape to an extent. I just think Lupin is a rather sensible sort, though a bit down on himself. Not to say that JKR will write it that way, just that I'd find it believable.

Absolutely true. I went back and read Lupin's defense of Snape in chapter 16, and he really has tried to get past anything he held against Snape, and I was so proud of him for doing that...on his own proof (that Snape made the Wolfsbane), and not just on his faith in Dumbledore.

After this year, I wonder if Lupin might not identify with Snape much more than he ever has, maybe more than anyone else. It's in the same converstaion that he defends Snape, and talks about how he's been living with his "equals" (the werewolves). Yes, I'm coming around to Amanda's theory. If anyone can see beneath the surface of what Snape did, it may well be Lupin.

Though Lupin is also the first one to offer a reason why no one suspected Snape: "Snape was a highly accomplished Occulmens....We always knew that."

We don't know what happened to Greyback, do we? He was stunned at one point, but was he arrested? (I hope so!)

really?

*runs to check book, since has not yet re-read entire battle, heh*

Hum. Yes. It does rather look as though they may have caught him, though nobody mentions it directly. Fenrir attacks Harry, someone (Lupin, I bet) uses Petrificus Totalus on him, and we don't see Fenrir after that. He's certainly not with the other Death Eaters and Snape when they make good their escape.

Anyone else see if Fenrir is mentioned after that moment? I've checked, but haven't had time to do an exhaustive reread yet....

If they did arrest Fenrir, then that alone might mean that Lupin's time as a spy is done, as Fenrir appeared to be the solid link between the werewolves and Voldie.

Wait...wait a minute. Could Dumbledore have not been pleading with Snape to spare his life but rather to take it, so that Malfoy wouldn't have to?

I had wondered about Snape's interaction with Harry and all the cursing attempts and Snape continually yelling 'No, NO Potter!' only being angry at being called a coward and so pointedly. Wow...huh...

*grin* I think that, or something similiar, is very possible. I mean, we KNOW Dumbledore (mr. : "for the well-adjusted mind, death is only the next adventure") isn't afraid of death. Ergo, he *must* have meant something else when he pleaded with Snape.

And the fact that Snape doesn't curse anyone on his way out (well, not until Harry calls him a coward), and only deflects Harry's spells, and actually gives him a dueling pointer right in the middle of the fight ("Blocked, and blocked again, until you learn to keep your mouth shut and your mind closed, Potter!")...really makes me iffy about his pure!evilness.

JKRowling is the one who is Ever So Evil, we'll be discussing this till the new book comes out, I'm sure. :-P
