|06:35 pm - What?|
I was browsing articles on the FanLore Wiki, and on a whim entered my handle into their search engine.
I have my own FanLore Wiki article. O_o It's not at all informative, really, and must have been put up, gosh, a long time ago? I'm really entertained, though.
Current Mood: amused
A bunch of my Farscape stories are listed there, for some reason, although there isn't actually much information on any of them.
Oooh, yeah, I remember that kerfuffle. Apparently fanhistory just went and swiped huge amounts of information from FanFiction.net. Unnerving!
wiki is NOT the FanLore
wiki. It distresses me when people confuse them, because FanHistory has a very bad reputation (editorial bias, exploitation, revealing fan pseuds), while FanLore is run by the OTW (who are also the ones behind An Archive Of Our Own aka AO3).
Alas, you don't have a page on FanLore. But I do
*cocks head* You sure they're not linked? I mean, I'm not questioning your fannish knowledge, you have been around much longer than I have, but...I've never heard anyone make that distinction before. Huh.
Well, this particular bit of knowledge is not very old at all, you've been around for it yourself. I guess it depends on what fannish circles one wanders in: I can't remember where I learned about it, who told me. But take a look; they're different sites, with different URLs and different content. I think FanHistory had some sort of bot which grabbed information from fanfiction.net, since a lot of "fan" pages consist solely of a list of stories from there.
I guess what I meant is that the only Fandom history wiki I've heard mentioned is FanLore (perhaps because I subscribe to the OTW newletter, etc), so it surprised me that there would be another one, and that I would not have heard that there were 2.
The FanHistory site was actually created earlier than the FanLore site; I have no information on whether FanLore was created in response to the bru-ha-ha about FanHistory or not.
FanLore v FanHistory
oh yes. They're not linked at all.Fan History
was started by...some person I don't remember their name and swiped bunches of names from fanfiction and stuff just to make articles and has been accused of making efforts to publish public identities to go with fannish identities even after the request that those links be taken down (I think this policy since changed).Fan Lore
is one of the things run by the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW) and is more open to editing by anyone. I think OTW has its own controversies about studying fandom academically.
(I often get the two names confused though unless I actually *go* and look at the site, but either is VERY INSULTED if you think they're the other one).
Oh, the things you learn from reading fandom wank.

Re: FanLore v FanHistory
Ah, see, I pretty much hate FandomWank (it's not as bad as, say, metafandom, but still), so no wonder I thought that the only fandom history wiki out there was FanLore. :)
Re: FanLore v FanHistory
I don't follow FandomWank, but there's one person on my flist who does, and occasionally she blogs about it, so I guess that's how I found out.
Yeah, I have a Fan History as well. Which is funny as they don't include any of the more impressive fannish things I've done.
I have one too. It weirds me out a bit.
Ooo, I'm on there too. Basic info, and fortunately no link to my current username (I've been meaning to separate those out, one of these days). Weird.
