For the disciple (for yourself). At least so it reads to me, and I rather like that.

Hmmm. I'm not quite sure I get it. But maybe I do and I just need to wake up more. I've only had about two sips of coffee and it's 7:30am. :P

Yeah, it took me a few minutes, too. From the general reactions here I should possibly have revised it to be more clear, but I kind of wanted the moment of ambiguity to remain intact.... :)

Er . . . huh? That would appear to be saying that being a disciple makes you a narcissist. What am I missing here?

My thought as well. Which to me would imply that the person involved only prides themselves on appearing to be a disciple, as opposed to truly being one -- because a genuine disciple would have their eyes fixed on Christ.

Though from whitemartyr's reaction I am thinking perhaps I need to start drinking coffee, and then it will make more sense? Except, IMO, nothing could be worth the pain of drinking coffee. Tea, possibly.

I probably should have "translated" it, but I liked the moment of "what...?" that I had when I heard it the first time.

Not that being a disciple makes you a narcissist, but that narcissism--that excessive focus on the self--is what being a disciple will cost you, what you will have to give up if you really want to follow Christ.

Ohhhhhhh, THAT makes much more sense.

Maybe I really do need to start drinking coffee. Or getting to bed earlier.

I'm glad I read the comments, because I was all "...wait, what?"
